Printy Winty
We were given a two week print project on Defining Our Space. I originally came up with three ideas for projects , 1. Maps, I looked at aerial photographs of my local area and places of relevance to me and thought that this idea would make for some colourful and interesting mono prints. 2. I was looking at windows being what defines my surrounding space, which was more personal because I was going to use what I would call my windows , my bedroom window, my studio window , my car window and what I could see from each etc, being what defines my space. 3. I also took an interest in my local area Clarenbridge and thought that some of its old houses and bridges would be interesting to look at because I consider it to be my immediate space where I'm at home
I then remembered Tyrone house. Tyrone House County Galway was built in 1779. (It should not be confused with Tyrone House, Marlborough Street, Dublin, a townhouse designed by Richard Cassel for Marcus Beresford, 1st earl of Tyrone of the 3rd creation in 1740.) It is situated on a promontory by the sea, about two miles from the village of Kilcolgan, County Galway, Ireland. It was a big solemn house, grandly planned, three stories high, built on a height, in order to dominate the surrounding land and sea. The front faced south, and the northern side was protected by dense woods, beyond which lay the Kilcolgan river. Its original owner was Christopher St. George. Arthur French St. George is described as a resident proprietor in 1824. In 1972, the Irish Georgian Society acquired the ruin of Tyrone. The house was destroyed by the local IRA unit during the Irish War of Independence. Its dominant position, visible from large tracts of South Galway, made it a candidate as a base of operations for the Black and Tans.

The reason this house was of interest to me was that as a child going up this building seemed like a cool place to go for an adventure but we were always advised by the locals and our teachers and parents that it was haunted and not to go , its probable this was because its a ruin and it's dangerous, rather then it being haunted, I don't believe in ghosts.
My first objective was looking at why people would not enter the house , what prevented them from going into this certain space. I looked to combine an image of the house with another layer containing ghostly figures and look for an old ghostly faded look in my prints. I wasn't at all pleased with my first prints but having never done it before and with the print room being overcrowded it was difficult to grasp it. I was pleased with the two prints that lay side by side prior to this one, I felt I got them to look ghostly enough and if you look closely at the background you can see the very dim silhouette of what my idea of a haunting is.
I went to Tyrone house to photograph it and to see if I got any eery buzz off being there, and give all those ghost believers a chance. I will upload the photos soon I just got the best of them and printed them for my sketchbook and I still don't believe in ghosts. It was said that Tyrone house was burned down by the Ira while a man lay asleep. the haunting now supposedly comes from his ghost who stayed there to haunt it because he had been unfairly treated. The print above is an image that i took of an arch way down in the dungeon area of the house , when I saw the photos after I had been there it was hard to tell what this photo was because it was a bit of a mind fuck. I don't think I portrayed it very well in my print but, I reckon with some more attempts I could have gotten it to work.
Since I didn't like most of my first prints of the house I decided to go more graphicy on my next one . One because we were only give two sheets of acetate. I looked to include a figure as the main image and the house in the background . The figure represents imagination and what keeps us out of a certain space. Rather than physical barriers, stories keep people from Tyrone house.
I printed the same picture in black and white because it was a step to getting the ghost prints, I thought some of these came out nicely !
Here is a ghost print , that is where you run your already printed acetate through the printing press again and the very last bit of in remains on the page and makes it look ghostly , I did that a lot considering that it suited my project very much so.
Another ghost print.
We were given a mini project on the Thursday of the second week and the title was clutter , being aware that this was only a one day project i wanted to do something simple. I thought long and hard about what to do and tripped over my shoes doing so . Everyone always seems to forget where their shoes are and trips over them and they always take up unnecessary space.I took four photographs of my shoes and made an etch of the drawing above.
Here's how they looked the first time I printed them . I wasn't too impressed by the quality but I was advised by Fiona one of the tutors on how to get it looking like a more solid print.
I wanted to add colour to my prints and have splashy effects in the background because it was just what came to mind when I thought clutter.
At the end of the two weeks I realised that I quite enjoyed print even though I've been set on graphics all along . Good craic ... =D
