Playing with shadows

At the beginning of the year I decided to make a snail model out of wire. While making this model I happened to put it down onto a white sheet of card and observed that the shadows were quite interesting.

Rather than the body of a snail the shadow gave the piece life. It took wings and to me it began to look like a butterfly.
I quickly made the shell to see if this would add to the structure. It did, the piece to me was no longer about a snail it was the dispersal of shadows that was leading me back to the project title of movement and motion.

SNAIL OR BUTTERFLY?

I decided that recording this beautiful shadow was the least I could do so I quickly penciled in the shadows that the main body of the snail was casting with black marker as it seemed the most appropriate as the word shadow immediately sparks dark dull colours.

Primary colours red ad yellow were my next decisions to use for recording the shadows as butterflies are colourful creatures. I was very pleased with the results that came from this accidental piece.

My butterfly snail was complete

Without the wire casting shadows I still found the lines left behind interesting marks. This piece hanging on my wall a the moment was a very early project but i like the mark it left and thats why i fell that it is one of my most visually pleasing.
